We spoke to Michele Montgomery who shed more light on the event and what we can look forward to.
What is Capital City Comic Con all about?
Capital City Comic Con is a community-based initiative about freedom of expression, bringing fans together, and creating a high quality, ongoing and sustainable comic con that will grow for many years to come. This wonderful event will be dedicated to comics, the industry, toys, gaming, family fun, science fiction, special guests and pop culture of all kinds. Capital City Comic Con is looking forward to three days of panels, signings, Live On Stage, entertainment, cosplay, exhibitors and more in two unique venues.
Who are the founders?
National Toy Museum of Canada (Cherry Bomb Toys), Tourism Victoria and Downtown Victoria Business Association came together to form a not-for profit organization.
Why and how did it start?
Victoria has always had a vibrant fan culture scene from award-winning graphic novel and vintage comic book stores, popular gaming shops, a booming technology sector, to Hollywood film locations. For sometime, many locals had been asking Cherry Bomb Toys, home of The National Toy Museum of Canada, to do a Comic Con. Noticing the need for a fun spring event, Tourism Victoria and the Downtown Victoria Business Association thought the idea would be a welcome addition for the city and helped create Capital City Comic Con. Working together, the three founders made this dream come true. They saw the potential in creating an event that would not only bring people together in a positive way but also promote downtown business, tourism to the beautiful city and support the local, ever-growing nerd community.
What do you hope to achieve?
The goal is to build a Convention of quality that will grow each year expanding throughout the city that the community can be proud of. Capital City Comic Con is looking forward to not only showcasing some of the amazing talent the world has to offer but to bring fans, from all over, together to enjoy a world class event for years to come in a city full of ambience and charm.
What is the best thing about Victoria and what will the con give to the city?
The best thing about Victoria is that it is a fast growing, dynamic and vibrant city with a tremendous lifestyle. Greater Victoria has a booming technology, education and tourism scene including a well-established Geek culture. We are the best kept secret in North America. Victoria was recently voted as the number 2 international small city in the world by Conde Nast Traveler’s readers’ poll so the secret about Victoria is getting out.
