When you were rebooting Captain Canuck, did you leap right into a ground up reboot or did you mull over using the original, classic Canuck in modern stories?
The first. I was approached to redesign the character for the web series initially, which was always envisioned as a complete reboot and modernization. It was only when the idea doing a comic series came up a year or so later that we decided to also incorporate an ongoing backup featuring 'Classic Cap' stories written by Ed Brisson. Those backups, incidentally, will be spinning into the All-New Classic Captain Canuck monthly series, also written by Ed, launching in 2016.
So, what sort of characters were your inspiration for the new supporting cast around Tom Evans? In specific, Redcoat, Kebec and Horse.
I'll do these in cliched movie pitch-style couplets.
Redcoat- Black Widow meets the host of Weakest Link.
Kebec- Saga Noren (from the Scandinavian noir series The Bridge,) meets Wolverine.
Horse- Andy B (my former studiomate and artist of the excellent Southern cross) meets the owner of the first retail store I worked at (who shall remain unnamed here.) Horse has actually been in my head in various forms for years now. I'd tried to fit him into a couple different projects previously, but this one was finally the right fit. He was always a sniper though, but since we already had Kebec, he became the pilot.
Of the other support characters we don’t know a great deal about yet, what brought them together. Were they all military, were some civilian and if you can provide examples, what sort of talent do some of them bring?
While staffing up Equilibrium recruited from both military and civilian sectors.
Parminder Patel is the next-gen science and technology specialist. She's incredibly clever and is the only one able to engage with Michael about alien knowledge he has in his brain. She's also the fan-girl of the group. Parminder designed the costumes, and is really excited about the superhero of it all.
Unfortunately Bryan Dwyer AKA Steeltown Hammer kind of got sidelined in the first arc. I have big plans for him though, and we'll see some of them in Canuck's second arc, the Gauntlet.
We're also introducing a new member of the team in issue 7, Philip Wise. He'll be acting legal council for Equilibrium, something a guy like Michael really needs.
Two parter: I feel like Blue Fox takes cues from the more feline anti-heroes we know (ie: Black Cat, Catwoman), but how did she come about? She is obviously an entirely different character from the classic Canuck series, but does she have any previous history with Canuck that perhaps pre-dates the comic book?
Part 1- Original web series producers Dean Henry and paul Gardner had the great brainstorm to take a throwaway character from the original series and rule 63 him into a femme fatale foil for Canuck, and I was only too happy to supply the sci-fi ninja look to go along with it.
Part 2- I can't answer this! Spoilers, fool! :) But I can say she is a big part of the new arc The Gauntlet starting in Captain Canuck #7.
So far in this series, powered individuals are incredibly limited. What plans do you have for introducing additional super-powered characters? Will the Human-Lizard & Mother Wonder, for instance, be referred to or show up? Anyone else you can mention?
Captain Canuck and the Human Lizard have met once already in one of Jason's Made in Chinatown specials. Who's to say it won't happen again?
Seriously though, so far, the Canuckverse has been a pretty grounded one. It's not the Marvel U, and metahumans are a rarity. So far we've seen Canuck and Mr. Gold display superpowers, and while we haven't seen Michael use powers per se, we know he was altered in some way by the alien tech at Site: ALEPH.
Okay, I'll drop this here. Canuck's universe is about to get bigger. We're taking another flag wearing Canadian super-icon from the past and giving him the full Canuck-style reboot treatment. He'll debut in the new arc, the Gauntlet, and then spin off into his own series. There's a hint elsewhere in this interview as to who it might be.
You have a rich history of illustrating for a number of companies and projects. What would you say are your top five projects to date?
I'll list them in terms of personal satisfaction
Lastly, tell us something about yourself that you might deem quirky or unique. An interest, Hobby or favourite thing to do?
When I'm not writing and drawing comics I'm hunting down and selling vintage clothes. Picking relaxes me and gets me out in to the world. My store is www.evolvintage.com
